In today’s networked economy, businesses depend on each other to provide goods and services. Both private and public organizations rely on contracts to form and govern their interactions. Contracts have become primary tools for executing strategy and managing opportunities and risks. The explosion of contracting raises fundamental questions about the ways contracting works – and what we can do to make it work better.

We are inviting attendees from both the private and the public sector, knowledge users and providers from both business and research organizations, to join us in this Conference offering a unique mix of established practice and novel research in the field. This Conference sets the scene to establishing common ground for different professions involved in the practice or research of commercial contracting.

In the last few years, we have seen a growing interest – both in business and in academia – in the potential strategic advantage offered by contracts. We have seen business executives and public managers starting to pay attention to the quality and ease of their contracting processes and documents – and to the ways in which contracts impact their future revenues, costs and risks. We have seen scholars beginning to look into organizational contracting capabilities, the contractual foundations of collaborative projects, and their relation to successful project design and management. And we have seen a growing number of lawyers starting to practice what is known in Scandinavia as Proactive Law and in North America as Preventive Law, helping clients use contracts to lay a foundation for business success and problem prevention.

We wish to join the forces of the Conference audience and our experienced and knowledgeable speakers – leaders in business and public organizations, practitioners, as well as researchers – to discover and take full advantage of the opportunities that contracting can provide, today and in the future. Our goal is to disseminate both practical and research based information and share experiences in order to learn from and to merge good project, contract, quality, legal and risk management practices.

We are looking forward to meeting you in Turku in June at what promises to be a most stimulating event!
